Artist statement: the Reflections series

For several years I have been experimenting with photographs that reveal a different way of seeing and experiencing the world through the use of reflective surfaces. I have taken mirrors into the desert, forests, and mountains. I have worked with Mylar to reflect and distort light in creating self-portraits.

Since I was a child I have had a deep connection with the element of water. The ocean, rivers and lakes are where I go most often to find solace, inspiration, healing, and serenity. During these times of solitude I’ve been fascinated with the myriad ways that water mirrors and distorts whatever environment surrounds it. I have also discovered that each body of water has its own unique characteristics that become part of an interactive dance with light and shadow, wind, sun, rain, and clouds.

Several years ago I began looking at specific bodies of water and their surrounding environments with the idea of making photographic images that would transcend literal representations. I found that lakes offered the widest range of possible interactions between me, the camera, and the elements. I began to explore nuances in these interactions as I searched for unique aspects of beauty that could be unveiled if seen through the perspective of reflections.

With this series of color photographs I focused on selected lakes in California and Canada. Through repeated visits, I developed a special relationship with each of these environments. I spent many hours walking, sitting and listening, looking, and being with these lakes. This approach enabled me to connect with—and interpret with new eyes—aspects of these water landscapes not apparent to the casual observer.
